The October 2019 Edition of “The Chirp”, the official Sparrow’s Nest newsletter, features an inspirational note from founder Krista Jones.
In the middle of my morning yesterday, I sat down on the floor and cried. I had rushed that morning to put a load of laundry in the dryer, was trying to get the night’s dinner in the crock pot, was frantically looking for my debit card to add money to my child’s lunch account and was 10 minutes late for my first meeting. I had already made one child the bake sale products she needed, threw the track shoes in the car for another kid and was well on my way to having a nervous breakdown when I swear I felt the need to stop.
In the middle of the living room, I swear I heard the words “just breathe”. Who has time to breathe? How in the world can we finish the 45 tasks we have that day if we have to stop and breathe? Maybe a better question is why in the world do we think we need to accomplish 45 things in a day? Is it really a big deal if I run to the grocery store and buy cookies or I order pizza for dinner? It might be a good lesson for a child to learn if I don’t run their forgotten shoes to school. At the end of the day, does anyone even realize if I checked everything off my list and who really cares?
So my on the floor meltdown ended up costing me another 10 minutes yesterday…10 precious minutes I had accounted for something so much more meaningful than a breakdown, but it was during those ten minutes crying on the floor I realized the most important items weren’t even on my list of 45 things to do. Give my kids a hug. Have a meaningful conversation with my family. Watch a movie with them. Help someone with homework. Dance with my kitchen manager who is excited about our upcoming destination run in Disney.
No one understands the value of time more than someone who is fearful of losing it. A cancer diagnosis isn’t planned or welcomed but nonetheless can creep into any of our homes and rob us of time we wished we would have used differently. So, when you look at your “things to do list” weed out the stuff that really doesn’t make a difference to the people you love.
Time is a gift. Use it wisely.
