The Chirp – April 2021
The April 2021 Edition of “The Chirp”, the official Sparrow’s Nest newsletter, features an inspirational note from founder Krista Jones.
Spring is a time for new beginnings, new births and our birthday — eight years ago this week — and boy do we have a lot to celebrate!
I don’t think it’s a coincidence that we began this charity in the springtime, a time when the darkness becomes shorter, and the light slowly creeps back in. It seems only fitting the celebration of our birth coincides with a time in history known for hope, love and the ultimate sacrifice. It has been so amazing to watch this dream bloom and to see all the people it has helped in the process. From taking meals to a dozen people, to now serving as many as 300 each week. This charity has grown into everything I have hoped for — a place for our community to make a difference and see the results firsthand.
As we take the week to celebrate our birth, I want to thank every person that has believed in us. Without that support, we could have never made our own sacrifices to get here. With the holiest week of the year still in view, I feel it can all be summed up in just one quote from Doctor David Jeremiah, “Easter is why we don’t give up”.
Happy Birthday Sparrow’s Nest!
Eight years ago this week Sparrow’s Nest officially became a charitable organization serving our Hudson Valley community. Eight years ago this week, a seed was planted, and a beautiful flower has bloomed.
In eight short years we have served more than 2,000 people and we have been embraced as the heart of this Hudson Valley community. As we reflect on how far we’ve come, we are looking forward to where we’ll go from here. Here are a few of the things we’re celebrating this week…
We’ve launched a new website! Whether you’re interested in learning more about what we do, looking to make a donation or know someone who could use our help, our new website can help. Come back often as we continue to update it with new information, photos and ways to get involved.
We’re celebrating birthdays! A long overdue dream of Krista Jones, our Executive Director, is surprising our recipients and their families with cupcakes for their special day! Now her dream is a reality, thanks to the hard work of the students at the Culinary Institute of America. Celebrating important occasions, especially a birthday, is one of the priceless joys of life. We are so grateful to community partnerships that allows us to deliver joy!
Magnifying our mission. The heart of our mission here at Sparrow’s Nest is delivering homemade meals to our recipient families each week. But often we feel like there’s so much more we want to do! That’s why we’ve created our Supplemental Food Program, Camp Sparrow Program and our Aftercare Program. Each one provides added support outside of our main mission, lifting families through some of the darkest times in their life. Get a sneak peek at what these added services do for our families by clicking here.
We’ve re-imagined our events! Many of us would like to forget the year 2020 but, we have to admit, it was good for a few things. It forced us to re-imagine all of our events… and they’ve become bigger and better! Our new Virtual Superhero Challenge & 5K kicked off on April 1st. Our hope was that 500 people would register and help us raise $40,000. Today, there are 733 people participating and they’ve already raised more than $50,000! The Challenge runs through May 30th and there’s still time to join us. Click here to learn more and to register.
We know how fortunate we are to be lifted by this community who, in turn, allow us the privilege of lifting our recipients and their families. Thank you for eight beautiful years. We can’t wait to share our vision for the next eight!
Meet the Connolly’s
Bridget and Dan and their three children, Maeve, Ryan and Deirdre, have been supporting Sparrow’s Nest since our very beginnings. Their connection to our mission began 8 years ago when Bridget’s best friend, Nancy, was diagnosed with lung cancer. A fledgling organization at the time, Sparrow’s Nest began providing weekly meal deliveries to Nancy, a mom with 3 young children of her own.
“The burden of shopping and cooking dinner for her family was lifted and gave Nancy more time and strength to fight cancer,” recalls Bridget. “Sparrow’s Nest not only provided food, but emotional support for Nancy and her family during the most difficult time of their lives.”
Throughout her illness, Nancy and her own family supported Sparrow’s Nest. And when Nancy decided to join Team Sparrow and commit to a half marathon in Disney, Bridget was right by her side. Bridget and Nancy both crossed that half marathon finish line, and Bridget would later join Team Sparrow in Las Vegas. In addition to her participation in Team Sparrow, Bridget and the entire Connolly clan can always be found at our annual Superhero event.
The Connolly’s passion for our mission has never wavered, so it was no surprise when we unveiled our new monthly giving program, Sparrow’s Circle, that the Connolly’s were one of the first supporters to sign up. Their commitment of this recurring monthly donation is a true gift that helps sustain our mission, allowing us to continue providing meals to families like Nancy’s.
When asked why they continue to support the charity, Bridget says “Sparrow’s Nest provides for families during a dark time in their lives. It is an incredible service that our community desperately needs and helps families know that they are not alone in their battle. As Sparrow’s Nest continues to grow, we will continue to support their mission and feel honored to be a part of it.”
What is Sparrow’s Circle?
Sparrow’s Circle, our new monthly giving program, was created to give our dedicated community of supporters an easy way to ensure that Sparrow’s Nest has the resources to be there for families in crisis, for as long as that crisis persists.
Our monthly donors make it possible for us to:
- Support long-term cancer survivors
- Provide continued meal deliveries to families for up to one year after the devastating loss of a loved one due to cancer
- Ensure that we never turn a qualified recipient away
- Provide a steady source of funding for our mission throughout the year, allowing us to continue feeding local families coping with a cancer diagnosis.
Consider becoming a Sparrow’s Circle member and help make a difference all year long.
