Join us for a special #GivingTuesday on Cinco de Mayo!
In early March, COVID-19 forced New Yorkers to put our lives on-hold. That stoppage included the temporary closing of our Sparrow’s Nest kitchen. During this historic time, COVID-19 has tested our resolve and transformed our methods but, through it all, we have remained focused on our mission: feeding our friends and neighbors living through a cancer diagnosis.
But these unprecedented times have called for unprecedented action.
Today, the world looks different. COVID-19 has introduced a new normal in which we all struggle to keep our families safe. At Sparrow’s Nest, our family is made up of our friends and neighbors adapting to this strange new normal while also battling through cancer. For them, nothing is normal.
On this Giving Tuesday, a nationally recognized day of giving, please consider donating to Sparrow’s Nest so that we can continue to be a beacon of light in an otherwise chaotic landscape. Today, we ask those of you who are able, to consider a one-time donation or a recurring donation that will help feed our families. Your choice of a recurring donation will not only impact our work today but in the uncertain months to come as we continue to transform and expand our services.
Since the temporary closing of our kitchen 8 weeks ago, Sparrow’s Nest has added 31 new people to the list of more than 300 individuals that we feed each week. Thanks to our community partners – local restaurants, farms and grocery stores – qualifying families have not been turned away and service to those families already in our care has never been interrupted.
Our role as a support system to some of the most vulnerable in our community has never felt more important than it does right now. As such, we have expanded on our mission during this unprecedented time. Each week we continue to provide prepared meals to our recipients while also delivering groceries that include milk, eggs, produce and meat. Additionally, we have provided our families with gift cards to help offset the cost of feeding their families while we all navigate this new normal. Over the last 8 weeks, the cost of maintaining and expanding our mission to support our friends and neighbors has tripled.
Our hope is that, together, we will reach our goal of raising $25,000 to help offset the increased cost of continuing to provide expanded and uninterrupted services to our families – because while New York has stopped, Sparrow’s Nest has not.
