The April 2018 Edition of “The Chirp”, the official Sparrow’s Nest newsletter, features an inspirational note from founder Krista Jones.

Krista Jones, Founder of Sparrow's Nest Charity

We are celebrating our fifth anniversary this month and kicking it off with our new expansion further into Putnam, Ulster and Orange counties. I can’t think of a better way to commemorate this milestone than being able to offer our services to even more people.

People are often surprised when I say the journey getting here was not easy. I understand the reaction because when you look at it as an outsider you can see all the love and support that has come our way. But believe me, it wasn’t always easy. From the time I decided to start a charity, I had a ton of challenges….filling out the paperwork, incorporating the organization, writing the bylaws, learning what types of people should sit on a Board, figuring out what fundraisers would work and going against the naysayers by chasing this crazy, impossible vision.

I had people tell me it would never work. The IRS rejected my first attempt at 501c3 status. I had no idea how to file half the paperwork, come up with a strategic plan and make the logistics work seamlessly. Foundations turned us down for grant money, businesses wanted to see if we could sustain ourselves before giving and in the midst of all this I wanted to give up….but I didn’t.

As funny as it might sound, I tell this story to ENCOURAGE you. Do not consider your struggles defeat, consider your struggles part of what will make you stronger and wiser. There is nothing wrong with falling down. Dust yourself off and get back up. The one who falls and gets back up is so much stronger than the one who never fell.
